If a child is showing symptoms of heat-related illness, they should be brought to a cool place and provided with cool water or a sports drink that contains electrolytes. After consuming fluids, a child can eat salty foods like pretzels or potato chips, according to the AAP.
Other at-home ways of cooling down include avoiding exercise or strenuous activities, taking a cool bath or shower, placing wet cloths or ice on your wrists, neck, and temples, and wearing light-colored, loose-fitting fabrics like cotton and linen—and dressing your children in loose, light clothes as well.
On Tuesday, the heat turns up even more with high temperatures across the region likely in the mid-upper 90s. The forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday in Philadelphia is for a high of 98 degrees, which would tie the record for both days.
